Sarkhej Roza is a Sufi Mosque and tomb complex located approximately 7 kilometers of the city of Ahmedabad, in Gujarat. Although there are many Roza’s across Gujarat, Sarkhej remains one of the most revered, being at the center of Sufi culture at its prime – being the residence of influential Sufi Saint Shaikh Ahmed Ganj Baksh.
The architectural photography of the complex aimed to serve as a window into the past, attempting to capture the geometric intricacies of Persian Architecture – capturing their fine detail, but also the architectural harmony of symmetry, repetition and organization. The images were edited and converted to black and white images in order to focus on this horizontal and vertical linearity. By muting the colours (and textures, to a certain degree), the architectural geometry becomes more pronounced, allowing us to contemplate the patience and transcendental skill of those who created this historical monument.
